Etsy Feature: Topiary Designs

"I’m a little of a strange mix. I spent three years working for the lovely Claire Pettibone designing lingerie and girly pajamas. I already loved lace and textiles and the job taught me so much about how they were made and all the different types. While I was there she launched her bridal couture line which exposed me to some of the most exquisite laces and embroideries in in the world. I loved visiting the bridal room and staring at all the pretties!

I am a self professed girly girly but I realize lace is not the most practical fabric to wear. I started with the idea of making all these textiles I had come to love more accessible by using them to make jewelry. Plus I’ve just recently moved from the heart of Los Angeles to a small town of 12,000 in the woods of northern California so my girly girly aesthetic is a little unpractical out here. When I decided to launch Topiary I wanted to bring that beautiful feminine vintage look I loved and merge it with the beauty of woods, moss, trees, streams, deer and wild turkeys that I’m discovering at this stage in my life. It’s still a work in progress! I always have 5 million ideas of what I want to make and enough time to make and photograph 5 of them."

Organic Shea Beauty giveaway

CLOSED
Jacqui from Shea Beauty has sent me a lovely bundle of items to giveaway to one of you.

At Shea Beauty they do not use any harmful synthetic chemicals, fragrance, colourants, preservatives or animal ingredients in any of our products.
It's good for you, the products smell delicious and it's not harming the world. Triple win really.

"My inspirations are all things natural. I am totally passionate about all natural beauty, bordering on obsessed probably. Research suggests that around 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our skin and that women ingest around 4lbs of lip product each year and if we don't want all the chemicals in our body or food, we definitely don't want them on our skin either. The cycle is turning back to a more natural/organic lifestyle which is fantastic. Natural ingredients have been tried and tested for thousands of years, Cleopatra was said to bathe in milk & honey and early Aborigines used tea tree.
You need are passion, a lot of hard work & dedication!"

The bundle includes,

(left to right -beauty massage bar, baby butter, argan oil& perfect hair
worth a total of £32.25)

Argan oil is huge at the moment and i have a bottle of it pure to giveaway. You'll find it on the label of the majority of cult beauty products. There are so many different thing's you can use it for (in food too , "Tagines and Couscous: It adds a nutty flavor to tagines, stews and couscous, imparting an aroma reminiscent of hazelnuts.", get inventive), here's another beauty related example
Hair-
Helps condition hair, restore shine to hair & care for the scalp. For an intensive treatment, apply argan oil to dry hair and wrap in a towel for 30 mins, or overnight, then wash hair as normal. For scalp problems/dandruff, concentrate the oil on the scalp & hair roots. Can also be used on dry, styled hair to reduce frizz by applying a very small amount and warming between hands, then scrunching into hair.

Because all of these products are so pure, you only need to use a little bit at a time so they will last ages.

Chainchainchained

Lovely Regina from Chainchainchained (a jewellery site i've been eyeing for a while) agreed to do a little interview with me,

Who's behind chainchainchained?
Me, Regina and a little Brussels Griffon by the name of Alfie.

How/where did you get the idea for your name?
Chain chain chain...chain of fools. I'm a Detroiter and so is Aretha Franklin. When I first began making jewelry my process was to mix and layer
vintage chains. The name just made sense.

What's your inspiration?
Really anything. I like having a clear head, so I often go for walks. Nature, whenever possible. The fresh air is cleansing and allows for new ideas to develop. Music, of course is very inspirational. Often, friends will make requests for something they dream up and it will soon end up in my shop.

How did you get started and do you have any advice for someone wanting to get into the industry?
I started small. In the summer of 2006, a few friends encouraged me to join them on an annual trip to Brooklyn, for the Renegade Craft Fair. I didn't sell much then, but I was really inspired by all the creativity around me.
My advice for someone wanting to start a small business is make sure you love what you do, it shows. Research to see who else out there is making similar things. Don't be afraid to fail. Be nice! Don't give up when things get slow. Don't take yourself too seriously. Go outside.

What's been your favourite moment so far relating to your company?
I've had a few at this point. I always love getting little emails from past customers saying how much a piece of jewelry meant to them. Little reminders that the things I make people happy is a great feeling.

If you could describe yourself in three words and another three for your jewellery, what would they be?
me: dreamer, alchemist, charmer
jewelry: quirky, fun, magical

Where do you want to be in five years?
Happy! Hopefully living and working in some coastal european city, gathering sea shells on the beach for my next project.

Thanks to Regina Pruss.
